» 1st Degree Burn
least serious burn in which only the outer layer of skin (epidermis) is affected. Skin is usually red, with swelling and pain sometimes present.

» 2nd Degree Burn
a burn through the epidermis affecting the second layer of skin (dermis). Blisters develop and the skin appears intensely reddened and splotchy with severe pain and swelling. 2nd Degree Burns larger than 2-3 inches may be considered serious and require medical attention.

» 3rd Degree Burn
most serious burn involves all layers of skin. Skin appears brown or charred. Can be either extremely painful or painless if nerves have been damaged. Fat, muscle, and bone may also be affected. Immediate medical assistance is required.
